I've already discussed some of the items that aim to help me keep that 1990s era Forgotten Realms vibe going; a limited scope of reference materials and a focused map. There is another fundamental item that I think will help, too.
The characters themsleves. According to the aforementioned Grand Tour of the Realms book (from the 2nd Ed. Revised Boxed Set), there are the following PC races and classes available.
Races: dwarf (shield, gold), elf (moon, sun, wild), gnome (rock, forest), half-elf (moon, sun, wild), halfling (lightfoot, strongheart), human.
Classes: fighter, ranger, paladin, wizard, cleric, druid, rogue, bard.
I like this list. It has a "classic fantasy" feel to me. It covers the character types found in the old novels and doesn't detract from the look and feel.
The closest class not on this list to being a good-fitting Realms choice, in my opinion, would likely be barbarian. You have Wulfgar of the Companions of the Hall, and nomadic barbarian riders to be found north of the Moonsea area, and in scattered tribes across the Sword Coast north. I don't know the history of 2nd Ed. AD&D well enough to know why barbarian was left out of Grand Tour of the Realms, but I'll go with it.
Here is a link to the PDF version of this PC Options document that expands on some aspects of character creation and attempts to find homes for each of these races within the subset of the map we'll be using.
